[tsc-devel] Email headers on the mailinglist

Hi everyone,
I apologize if anyone already configured his/her email setup to filter
emails on the list based on the List-Id: email header, which
accidentally had the incorrect value "tsc-devel.secretchronicles.de". I
have corrected that to the correct value
"tsc-devel.lists.secretchronicles.de" now.
Even more, I noticed other header problems that should have been fixed
now; the list now properly sets the entire List-*: header group including
especially the List-Post: header that tells properly implemented email
clients that this is a mailinglist. Also, Chris’ message to the
mailinglist had two Reply-To: headers, because I didn’t tell mlmmj (the
mailinglist manager program) to delete any existing Reply-To: headers;
this has been fixed. Please ensure you don’t accidentally privately
email Chris when you want to followup on his post due to my
mistake. Future posts will not suffer from double Reply-To: headers.
One question to you as users of the list. Sending mails to the list on a
topic is generally known as a _followup post_, whereas emailing the
author of an email is known as a _reply_. The latter is what the
Reply-To: header is intended for, it instructs the mail client where to
send the email if a "reply" is requested. Properly implemented email
clients should (as outlined above) recognize the List-Post: header and
provide a "followup" button (or similarly labelled) additionally to
allow sending mail to the list. However, there are mail clients out
there that do not notice List-Post:, but I have no idea how common or
rare that phenomenon is. Currently, I have configured the list to
*override* the Reply-To: header with the list address
(…l@l…), which is broken behaviour, but
allows you to just hit the "reply" button if your mail program does not
show a "followup" button to you. For doing a real reply to a post’s
author you therefore have to look at the From: header currently. Do you
want to keep it like that or do you want me to make the mailinglist use
the normative behaviour (just relying on List-Post: and not touching
Reply-To:)?
Valete,
Quintus
