[tsc-devel] Re: 170 Jam Song and Other Music...

This is my current analysis of the songs and how we might use them in Secret Chronicles. Keep in mind we still will need to get feedback from other team members, which will take some time.

Sources:
1. https://soundcloud.com/aakburns -- this is where all new songs Arik cited were
2. http://www.arikburns.com/Music.html -- these are older songs, but it has a handy copy of 170Jam

New songs that Arik listed in his email:
New Format - This is my favorite. It might be appropriate for a super computer room in the monster factory if we implement that. The only problem is that it does not loop (or end properly). It ends abruptly in the middle of playing. Ideally, we'd probably want it to loop for use in a level.
Rethink Life - This could be used for level music - it has a good beat and flow.
Virus - It sounds a bit like something I'd expect to hear out of a space fighter game, but we might be able to use it in a climatic level shortly before a boss.
DownGoesTheBubbleGum - This could work for a level. It starts a "little" like a dance song at the very start, but some of the instrument choices a bit into the song make me think of a mountain level. If we add Bowser Jr's Mountain Trials Level (with scripting added), this might work.
RoyDub - This could work for a level. I would see it in a night level or other level that solicits a little self reflection while keeping a beat going.
--Many of the other new songs have a bit more of a dance sound to them. There's nothing wrong with this at all, but I'm not sure how we could use them in Secret Chronicles now. Adding a level that takes place on a dance floor is an interesting discussion, but we'd need a story or side story to back it up.

Previously submitted song on secretmaryo.org:
170Jam - It needs to have the pause at the end reduced to be used. It also might be good to consider increasing the volume at the little at the beginning, since it's hard to hear one of the instruments there. I could see this being used as menu music or for something where the player is waiting or making decisions.

Old songs from his website (I'm not sure if these might have been used in another game or not or if Arik wants to submit them):
GoodBye - This song also has a long pause at the end that would have to be removed. This has a very nice symphonic sound and would work well for credits or anything conclusive.
Big Times - This would work well if we have an ancient ruins level.
Orchestral Rythms - This might be interesting in a large library that looks like it came out of the 1700's.

I was just listening to "170 Jam" again (it had been a while). You might also consider increasing the volume a little toward the start and/or adding another instrument toward the beginning. It's just a possible thought.

I'll be heavily tied up through at least Wednesday of this week with an exam and a lot of grading. At least I'll have some new music to listen to while I study :)

There were 2/3 songs I just listened to that might work really well in the game out of the new ones. I'll think on it a little more and get back to you in some days. I've also sent the links to the rest of the team (at the tsc-devel address on this email) so that they too can give feedback.

Thanks for offering to help - we definitely appreciate it!

Aside from the "170 Jam" song, we will welcome any other music you can write for the game. Also, we are renaming the game as "The Secret Chronicles of Dr. M" in order to eliminate Maryo (which sounds like Mario).
