I honestly don't think the concept would be too hard for new artists. It's also a staple of 2D platforming design.
Some people probably would mess up the dimensions of the sprites in the sheet (much like people use the wrong branch when filing PR's), requiring rework sometimes. This sort of thing is inevitable with about any procedure that must be exactly followed.

The benefit of saving processing when the game is run by players tends to outweigh this, though the team has come to the conclusion that the savings aren't enough to warrant the code architecture changes required for this.
I'd still be interested in getting more opinions from more programmers out there on this question. Grimshaw seemed to agree with Luiji, though it's always good to explore possibilities.
