By the time I was working with TSC/SMC the image cache was just there to
improve startup performance. If the game starts up fast enough for people's
preference without a cache then there's no real reason to have it. IDK the
current state of TSC but if you remove the image cache you might also want
to consider scaling down the images as they are distributed -- they tended
to be much bigger than necessary for even the highest resolution screens so
that they could downscale to anything.
