I second that, but I might overlook another reason for the existance of
the cache. If anyone knows, please speak up.

In any case, I don't think that such a major change should go into
version 2.1.0. This is something for a subsequent release, because it is
likely to cause some problems. In that it's different from the removal
of the package system, which was basically unused.

I invite anybody else here on the list to comment. This is a change that
deserves more opinions than mine and refi's.
